Year 6 Assessment: Moderating Writing at KS2

This three-part course aims to support Year 6 teachers to develop their understanding and application of the statutory Teacher Assessment Framework for Writing through termly opportunities to meet and moderate with Year 6 colleagues. Teachers may attend all three sessions, or select individual sessions from the course.

Session 1 - Thursday 18th October 2018, 13.15 - 16.30

Session 2 - Thursday 7th February 2019, 13.15 - 16.30

Session 3 - Tuesday 21st May 2019, 9.15 - 12.30

Suitable for Year 6 teachers, English subject leaders and Assessment leaders.

The course will:

  • address and unpick the criteria of the Year 6 Teacher Assessment Framework for Writing
  • explore creative teaching approaches to develop and secure pupils’ writing skills towards the ‘Pupils can’ statements
  • provide termly opportunities for teachers to moderate pupils’ writing with colleagues in order to discuss judgements and next steps

 

Session 1 - Thursday 18th October 2018, 13:15 - 16:30

Securing the Expected Standard

In this session, teachers will secure their understanding of the expected standard and explore teaching approaches to develop their pupils’ writing towards this.

 

Session 2 - Thursday 7th February 2019, 13:15 - 16:30

Greater Depth

In the second session, teachers will focus on the greater depth standard to gain an understanding of the criteria in the context of writing and to moderate and discuss the writing of those higher attaining pupils’ who are developing towards greater depth.

 

Session 3 – Tuesday 21st May 2019, 9:15 - 12:30

Cross-school moderation

In the final session, teachers will have an opportunity to moderate and discuss pupils’ writing from across the standards, agreeing or adjusting judgements with colleagues from other schools and discussing next steps to secure standards by the end of the teacher assessment period.
