Reading between the lines: Developing inference for reading

There is ‘very extensive’ evidence that the teaching and modelling of reading comprehension strategies has a positive impact on pupils’ learning. (EEF) But what about inference? In order for children to access, understand and enjoy a range of increasingly challenging texts, progressively sophisticated inference skills are required, which presents a challenge to both pupils and teachers.

This course will explore the development of inference skills across the key stages, from booktalk to independent application, and the stages of development in between.

Teachers will:

  • develop their understanding of inference and the progression in skills across the key stages
  • explore pedagogical approaches to teaching and modelling inference skills
  • participate in practical activities to developing inference through a range of texts
  • gain a range of strategies, approaches and activities to use with their own classes and to share with colleagues
